Last week the Bidvest Hear for Life Trust performed another life-changing cochlear implant operation.
Erin Francis is only 20 months old and she has already battled numerous obstacles. She was born at only 25 weeks (5 months) and was then diagnosed with profound hearing loss in both ears.
She was fitted with power hearing aids but these did not provide her with enough hearing to learn how to speak effectively. Erin has been in aural rehabilitation with Kerry-Lee Galliard since March last year and has shown good progress with her communication skills.
Her motor development has also progressed very well. Her parents are very dedicated to their daughter’s hearing and language development and have consistently attended therapy and hearing evaluations over the last year.
When the cochlear implant procedure was advised, they set about fundraising to help pay for the therapy and surgical costs. Their commitment, together with Erin’s response to therapy made her an ideal candidate for the implant operation, which was performed by Dr Hockman and sponsored by the Bidvest Hear for Life trust.
